Anyone out there vegetarian with kids? How do they respond to the switch from meat to vegan?

I’m thinking of going vegetarian, but my husband and kids are totally against it. Any good sites for kid-friendly meals? I’ve already tried soy dogs and burgers- they weren’t well-received.

Whatever your reasons are for making the change.. Good for you but remember it is your choice. If your kids and hubby aren’t hip do some research and slowly introduce foods that are more condusive to good health. Example: Cut out all foods with Hydroganated oils and High Fructose Corn Syrup. BAD BAD BAD… Almost anything you want these days you can find in a healthy alternative. Hit a GOOD health or whole foods store and do your homework. You can’t say no meat and then continue to eat all of the junk food that comes from meat like the lard in Oreo’s, twinkies, etc. Once you are educated you can stand in a place to educate your children and husband. One final note, at first you may try making the normal dinner with some alternatives and allow them to try try the veggie food along with the other. Either way, better eating habits far outway the rewards of the standard american diet (SAD diet).

    Good Luck

As a kid, the only veggies and fruits I liked were: corn, green beans, tiny peas, carrots, celery and potatoes; bananas, apples, canned peaches/pears/pineapple, orange juice and grape juice. These few have seen me through 58 years.

Then, and now, I’d run away from home if anyone took away my meat/fish!! If you insist on depriving your husband and kids of meat and fish, I hope you’ll at least let them have eggs and dairy products! If they had never had anything but a vegetarian diet and didn’t know what they were missing, it would be one thing. But to start NOW to deprive them of foods like this that they like would be mean. Your husband can always go out and get his meat fix on his own time, but your kids are at your mercy and may really resent you if you enforce the "no meat" rules fulltime.

Like another respondent said, offer them choices, and hope that they learn to like the taste/texture of the new items. Work up to a vegetarian diet slowly!! Serve gradually smaller portions of meat. Have an occasional meatless day. Try several different brands of soy products – the flavors can vary quite a bit and, to my taste, some are definitely better than others! Even I can tolerate a plain Boca burger, so you might want to try that one, if you haven’t already.

    GOOD LUCK! – Bev
