Your Health and Antioxidants
Everyone has heard the news about antioxidants and their importance to good health and proper nutrition. As science learns more about antioxidants, their value and potential increases. Indeed, antioxidants have shown promise in everything from preventing heart disease to slowing the degeneration of the eyes and brain. Antioxidants work in a fairly straightforward way. What makes them so effective is their ability to neutralize a group of highly reactive, highly destructive compounds known as free radicals.
The production of free radicals is a normal bodily process, and it’s part of the process of breathing and living. Free radicals are usually controlled by our body’s defense system. But, anything that weakens the body’s natural defenses weakens its ability to fight off these free radicals. Some of the weakening agents include environmental pollution, excess UV radiation, consumption of alcohol, too much stress, and wrong diet. When the body becomes too full of free radicals, it is more likely to get sick. Free radicals can damage the structure and function of cells in the body. Free radicals may also contribute to the aging process and may play a role in a great many illnesses, including cancer and heart disease. A fast and easy way of getting antioxidants is through fruit and vegetable juices. Wailana Yoga has over 60 different exotic fruit and vegetable juice and smoothie recipes you will surely enjoy.
While vitamin supplements containing antioxidants such as vitamin C can be important, there is no substitute for a healthy diet. It’s estimated that foods contain more than 4,000 compounds that have antioxidant qualities so eating a healthy diet is the only way to take advantage of these antioxidant
properties. In addition to the well known antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E, healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains also contain a lot of lesser known antioxidants. We are only just discovering the real role antioxidants have in keeping the body healthy.
Here are some of the major antioxidants:
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is probably the most studied of all the antioxidant vitamins. Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin found in all bodily fluids, and it’s thought to be one of body’s first lines of defense against infection and disease. Since vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, it is not stored and must be consumed in adequate quantities every day. Good dietary sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits, green peppers, broccoli and other green leafy vegetables, strawberries, cabbage and potatoes.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin that is stored in the liver and other tissues. Vitamin E has been studied for its effects on everything from delaying the aging process to healing a sunburn. While vitamin E is not a miracle worker, it is an important antioxidant, and it’s important that the diet contain sufficient amounts of vitamin E. Good dietary sources of this important nutrient include wheat germ, nuts, seeds, whole grains, vegetable oil, fish liver oil and green leafy veggies.
Beta-carotene
Beta-carotene is the nutrient that gives flamingos their distinctive pink color (they get it from the shrimp they eat). In the human world, beta-carotene is the most widely studied of over 600 carotenoids that have thus far been discovered. The role of beta-carotene in nature is to protect the skins of dark green, yellow and orange fruits from the damaging effects of solar radiation. Scientists believe that beta-carotene plays a similar protective role in the human body. Sources of beta-carotene in the diet include such foods as carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, collard greens, kale, cantaloupe, peaches and apricots.
Selenium
Selenium is one of the most important minerals in a healthy diet, and it has been studied for its ability to prevent cell damage. Scientists see this ability to protect cells from damage as possibly important in the prevention of cancer, and selenium is being studied for possible cancer preventative properties. It is important to get the selenium you need from your diet, since large doses of selenium supplements can be toxic. Fortunately, selenium is easily found in a healthy diet. Good sources of dietary selenium include fish and shellfish, red meat, whole grains, poultry and eggs, and garlic. Vegetables grown in selenium rich soils are also good sources of dietary selenium.
Eating well balanced meals, exercising right, and de-stressing is key to helping your body detoxify itself and get the antioxidants it needs. Wailana Yoga Mats has many varieties of mats for yoga practice.

SHAC City Shakedown: Animal Rights Protest – London, City of London – 27 February 2009

With HLS share price now the lowest it has ever been in four years, the unjust incarceration of SHAC campaigners and the latest images of monkeys being abused inside HLS from the latest expose by ADI, there was no better time to stand up and show the animal abusing money men that HLS are a bad investment and we will carry on the fight to close HLS.
Around 300 people traveled from around the country (and some from around the world!) to gather by the Bank of England, the only bank in the world to give HLS banking facilities at the behest of the Government for a loud and vibrant demonstration against the financial supporters of HLS in the centre of London.
The march aimed to publicly show the financial investors, or even prospective investors, that we wont tolerate puppies being thrown around, monkeys being cut open alive and other innocent animals suffering in silence. Of our anger, passion, focus and determination to carry on the fight despite repressive laws and long jail sentences that some SHAC campaigners have received.
The march started off in front of the Bank of England with 20 or so journalists and photographers who followed the protest march around a circular route of 2 miles around the city’s financial district.

Animal Rights -How To Save A Life

“No Skin Off YOUR Back.”
Hundreds of animals are killed off in Africa daily, due to illegal poaching. The White Rhino [endangered], has gone extinct in Rwanda. Shot and stripped of it’s horn. Elephants are killed, just for their ivory! The rest of the animals’ body is just left to rot away. All of the beef jerky we get in the United States comes from Africa. From animals that have been ruthlessly slaughtered.
In The good Ole U.S, animals are abused and beaten, literally, to death. Most left outside of their houses, with no shelter, no food, no water. We skin young and defenseless animals, for what? FASHION! That’s bullshit! Animals need their fur more than we do!
There are FOURTY animals for EVERY fur coat. The animals are either stomped on, anally electrocuted, or gassed.
Rise up against the corporations! Stop the madness! Save the life of an animal! It takes one to make a reaction, but it takes dozens to make a movement.
One Struggle. One Fight. Human Freedom. Animal Rights!
You’ve heard the truth, now react. Spread the news to your friends, your family. Only YOU can stop the madness.
Please, for the sake of the animals..
