What’s So Good About Alkaline Food?

Although the phrase alkaline food seems highly scientific and complicated, we are talking about simple, healthful foods that can be obtained conveniently from any grocery store. Most of us have always considered foods in terms of how many calories or how much sugar and fat they contain, but another way to think about food is to realize what it does when it is actually inside the body.

Once they get past your lips and are enjoyed by your taste buds, all foods are metabolized within the body so they can be processed through the blood stream and digestive organs and either utilized for functioning needs or eliminated from the body as waste. There are particles and residues of these foods left behind and some will have an alkalizing effect, while others are acid-forming in nature.

Higher alkalinity is a direct result of alkaline-forming minerals being present in the food, including calcium and potassium.

Alkaline foods are those that leave behind residue and particles that are more alkalizing than acidifying. As the human body is healthiest and happiest when it is somewhat on the alkaline side, these foods are more beneficial to the body and promote good health, more energy levels, and a strong immune system.

It turns out that alkaline food is whole food that is packed with nutrients and vitamins that the human body needs to work correctly. This includes most vegetables and fruits, as well as a handful grains such as buckwheat, and many nuts and seeds. While potatoes have gotten a bad reputation over the years for being too starchy or carbohydrate-rich to be good for you, they are truly a recommended staple on an alkaline diet because they are alkaline once they are eaten.

One thing worth noting is that foods that are acidic in their natural state, such as oranges and grapefruit, are not automatically acidic after inside the body!
