For the past two years, I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian. I have always wondered if I can continue eating products that contain gelatin. I know what gelatin is and what it is for, but I do eat dairy products that contain gelatin. Should I stop eating them with guilt or is it normal for a lacto-ovo to eat them? I do consider myself a vegetarian, not the strictest as you can see, but I do feel like one.
Peace.
Lacto-vegetarians have to read the labels, gelatin is a big no-no. If your going to eat gelatin you may has well have a burger that.

The animal has to die to in order to create gelatin – it’s not even close to vegetarian.

No, most do not. I confess, I haven’t seen a lot of dairy products containing gelatin these days, especially not cream cheese. Those that are low-fat may contain some vegetable thickeners: irish moss, guar gum, xanthan gum, kudzu, and/or agar.

You can find regular (full fat) cream cheese that does not have gelatin in it. Although finding light (less fat or fat free) cream cheese without gelatin may be almost impossible. Horizon Dairy distributes their organic cream cheese nationwide, and it is gelatin free.
Is it normal for a lacto-ovo-vegetarian to eat gelatin? Well, not as soon as they figure it out what it is made from. Lacto-ovo-vegetarian means eating plants, plus chicken eggs and dairy products. The term does not mean ‘anything else I want to only because I really like them.’
As for regarding yourself as a vegetarian – well…that is up to you. You don’t fit my definition of a vegetarian.
You don’t *have* to call your self a vegetarian at all. The only reason you want to is to belong to a group of people with similar values. But as you said yourself, you don’t quite fit into that group.
Do what you want, but you aren’t a vegetarian if you purposefully continue to eat beef products.
Would you consider yourself celibate if you only had sex with people who’s name start with "G" or any other arbitrary rule that allows you to continue to have sex? Of course not – conversely you are not a vegetarian.

Well truly depends on what reasons they become a vegetarian. They can eat gelatin if they are just for nutrution. But in my case i also do it for ethical reasons therefore i can’t eat gelatin since it includes the killing of the animal.
