Can Pesticides Make You Fat?
by Vaughan Lazar on 11/02/10 at 12:00 pm
Can pesticides make you fat? According to Stephen Perrine, author of “The New American” Diet, YES! It can also cause diabetes as well. Perrine’s newest book discusses certain chemicals found in common foods called “obesogens” and how they play a role in the American obesity crisis.
Obesogens are chemicals that disrupt the function of hormonal systems; many researchers believe they lead to weight gain and, in turn, numerous diseases that curse the American populace. They enter our bodies from a variety of sources—natural hormones found in soy products, hormones administered to animals, plastics in some food and drink packaging, ingredients added to processed foods, and pesticides sprayed on produce. They act in a variety of ways: by mimicking human hormones such as estrogen, by misprogramming stem cells to become fat cells, and, researchers think, by altering the function of genes.
Author Stephen Perrine (editor of Children’s Health, editor-at-large of Men’s Health) and co-author Heather Hurlock research and discuss the link between obesogens and the American obesity crisis, as well as increases in rates of diabetes, depression, heart disease, declining birth rates and sperm counts, and possibly autism.
In the clip below, Stephen Perrine chats with The Early Show host, Harry Smith about obesogens and their role in obesity and diabetes. He also goes to great lengths about how avoiding these chemicals are as easy as switching to an organic diet and eating grass-fed meats free of synthetic hormones.
Perrine even discusses the impacts of eating foods packaged in certain plastic containers and BPA. This guy may be onto something… Hmmm… Eating Organic is not only good for you, it can help you lose weight!

If I’m a vegetarian and I start eating meat again, will I get sick?

I’ve been a vegetarian for about one year now. Just out of curiousity, would I get sick if I ate an entire steak or any other large portion of meat?
Just eat a little to start out with. Good to see you’ve got your brain back.

I am invited to a get together and all the people are meat eaters, but I want to blow them away with a vegetarian dish, one that they will remember. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
These are totally addictive
Cheddar pecan wafers
I didn’t have cheddar the last time I made these and used up the last of the parmesan and gruyere I had and they were just as good.
Ingredients
1 cup pecans
2 sticks plus 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 pound super sharp New York cheddar
2 cups flour
1-2 teaspoons cayenne, or to taste
Popcorn salt
Method
Preheat the oven to 350
In a shallow baking pan, toast nuts in a single layer in the oven until fragrant, about 10 minutes.
While the nuts are still hot, transfer them to a bowl and mix in 1 tablespoon of butter and salt to taste. When the nuts have cooled, finely chop them with a knife.
Coarsely grate the cheese into a large bowl. Cut the two sticks of butter into small pieces and scatter over the cheese. Let the cheese and the butter soften. Add the nuts, the flour, and the cayenne. With an electric mixer, beat mixture until it forms a dough.
Divide the dough into 8 pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a log, about 1-inch in diameter. Wrap logs in plastic wrap and chill at least 8 hours. Wrap the dough in wax paper and foil to keep up to a week in the fridge, or in the freezer, up to two months.
Preheat the oven to 350
Work with one log at a time and while the dough is right out of the fridge or freezer.
Use a sharp knife to cut the log crosswise into 1/8-inch slices. Arrange the slices on parchment-lined baking sheets 1/2-inch apart. Bake the wafers in batches in the middle of the oven until pale golden, about 10 minutes. Do not overbake. While the wafers are still hot, sprinkle with popcorn salt.
Let the wafers cool a few minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
Each log makes between 50 and 60 wafers

Will it effect my growth?
Is a flexatarian better?
Not in any adverse way if thats what you mean. B12 and iron can be an issue, just take a vitamin/supplement for iron, and you can always get foertified (with both b12 and/or iron) bread and cereals at the grocery store.

Much of it, in my opinion, is just as much what we eat to replace the meat as anything else. A healthy vegetarian is going to replace that high-cholesterol, high-saturated-fat meat with fruits/veggies/lentils/nuts. Do that, you’re fine.
What happens if a vegetarian eats meat suddenly?

I’ve heard that if you’re vegetarian for a long time and you suddenly eat a lot of meat, you can get really sick. Is this true and if so, what are the symptoms? And what is it called?
if you suddenly eat alot of meat when ur a vegetarian than you will get a real sick feeling in your stomach. Your stomach gets rid of most of the chemicals in your body that digest meat when ur a vegetarian. So if you want to start then eat real small amounts at a time like every third day
Steps to becoming a vegetarian while a lover of meat?

I love my meat, but then I also love animals and the idea of being a vegetarian. I don’t want to just cut out meat in one day, I’d like to ease into it if I can. Any former meat lovers giving some tips would be great.
I don’t like the thought that animals are dying in horrible ways so I can eat when I don’t even need to eat them to survive.

What are good vegetarian recipes for a college student?

I’m going to college next year and i will be living with three of my friends. I’m the only one with cooking experience but i usually cook meat. I want to try the vegetarian thing with my friend but i need ideas for good quick and easy recipes. Any ideas?
I believe someone already sent you the link to Peta’s Vegan College Cookbook. GET IT. it’s vegan, but it has good ideas for recipes. I bought one over christmas break, and I use mine religiously.
Ramen is one of my favorites. Oriental Delight though, the beef, chicken, shrimp flavors aren’t vegetarian-friendly. I like to add some frozen vegetables before i microwave the ramen, Then sprinkle some Nutritional Yeast on top (one tablespoon has 8 grams of protein!).
Oatmeal is another very easy thing to make. Get a grinder so you can add some flaxseeds (contain omega-3’s which is found in seafood that we don’t eat). Top with Bananas.
Veggie burgers are microwavable and simple to eat. Add tofu fries for some extra protein (http://www.ehow.com/how_2301315_make-tofu-french-fries.html) or (http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=19606.0 for a simple recipe).
Basic things you need in order to do it right:
Extra Virgin Olive Oil (for baking veggies, tofu, salad dressing, etc.)
Seasonings (try getting some at the dollar store)
Nutritional Yeast (a nutty – cheesy substance for spaghetti, ramen, etc)
Flaxseeds (healthy fats)
Peanut Butter (healthy fats and protein)
Any other questions, feel free to ask me.

How do you handle being a vegetarian throughout the holidays?

This will be my first thanksgiving and christmas as a vegetarian. As everyone knows, christmas and thanksgiving have alot to do with food. I will be going to my parents for both occasions and I will bring my own food to contribute to the meal. Is this how other vegetarians get through the holidays? What types of food do you prepare?
I know my holiday food traditions will have to change, but I’m not sure where to start.
I usually bring my own main dish(which can double as a side for other people). I never feel left out or as if I am missing out on the holiday b/c I don’t eat meat. In fact I always look forward to thinking about what I am going to make that year. I feel lucky that I get to choose something different every year, instead of eating the same thing.
You holiday food traditions really don’t change much. It is still about good food(just good vegetarian food), and family.
For my Thanksgiving main course I like to use a lot of the winter vegetables. There are a lot of great recipes for vegetarian Thanksgiving, as well as recipes that work well in the fall.

I am not old enough to move out yet, sorry.
Breaded zuchinni, eggplant parmesean, all kinds of salads, potato dishes, mexicorn, roasted peppers, do you eat eggs and cheese?
there are millions of things to eat without meat. I am not vegetarian, but I still eat LOTS of stuff that doesnt have meat in it. Just start cooking for yourself, and them too. Veggie pizzas are very good. Pollenta and marinara sauce.
vegetable stir frys, use tofu, Its not that hard to come up with stuff. Tell your Mom that you will do the shopping and cooking sometimes. enter vegetarian dishes into the search bar. Dont forget fruits too. I just had a sliced Pear and pepperjack cheese salad with balsamic vinigar and rosemary on it. That was awesome.
I would bet that I could go into your kitchen right now, and make a whole veggie meal that everyone would like.
