How would you go about starting the Raw food Diet?
I just watched a documentary on going on a raw food diet, and from what I saw it’s supposed to make you feel a LOT better, but how would you go about starting this diet without spending TOO much money?
Fresh produce can be costly, especially in winter when a lot of things are imported. You’ll have to compare prices in the stores and markets in your area to find the best buys.
Lots of help online, some may link to local groups:
What types of affordable food dehydrators work well for raw foods?
I see a lot of the square black models, the Excalibur? Is there a big difference between that and the old school round ones? I was going to get a round one because they are less expensive, just making sure it has a thermostat, will this work for raw food cooking?
My family uses this one, we are about 80% Raw and it is perfect for us!

Hope I helped you on your raw journey!
What do you think of the raw food diet for dogs?
I feed my dog a mix of a little kibble with a raw food diet which consists of venison, chicken and egg. I was just wondering what other people used for their dogs and what you thought about the diet. It works well with my dogs and I don’t have any weight problems and they have great coats. They really love the raw over the kibble that is for sure. It is a little time consuming to get everything ready for them as I have 8 dogs but I think it is worth it in the long run.
I feed raw. So I obviously like it.
I would not suggest feeding kibble and raw together.as dogs digest each differently. if you want to do half raw half kibble. I would do one raw meal a day and 1 kibble a day.
I keep Orijen dog kibble around in case I forget to thaw a frozen meal. Also use it for his treat ball.
I use chicken (main meat source), Turkey(2-4 times a week) and some form of fish 2 times a week) every week. along With organs every few days, and eggs every FEW days.
Dog kibble i only 60 or so years old.
So technically raw it has been around much longer.
My dog doesn’t well on dog food. he gets loose runny stools (he has been on everything from 6 star gourmet food (orijen, taste of the wild welness ETC) to lowest junk possible such as ol roy or kibbles and bits, Purina ETC.
RAW is the only way keeps a shiny Lovely coat,firm small tools. his teeth are remarkable my vet can not believe a 6.5 year old dog still has pearly white teeth not a sign of tarter, and I hae never bushed them.
What should i start eating for the raw food diet?

Is a raw food diet good for a dog with struvite crystals?
My pug is prone to struvite crystals and I am curious about the benefits of a raw food diet for his condition. Does anyone have any information? I just want him to be healthy!
A dog that develops struvite crystals should be on a food with a reasonable protein level (arounbd 18-25%) that promotes a healthy urine pH. I use California Natural for my own dogs (one also used to develop crystals). There are prescription diets available, as well, though they cost more, and often, there are healthier choices available. If the crystals continue to recur, a prescription diet may be the best choice. They haven’t been back in my dog since I switched food.
Can you reach a low weight on a raw food diet?
Im going to go on a raw food diet, and i know lots of people lose weight on it, but i was just wondering if you can get actually skinny on it. All of the before and after pictures I’ve looked at show people who’ve lost a lot of weight, but none of them are *skinny*. Help please?
I know lots of skinny people that are on a raw food diet. Though, they do it for political or health reasons, not for losing weight. They are also physically active, so they are skinny, but muscular. I’d say if any diet would help you get "skinny", this would be it. Remember to drink lots of water, and please do some research about nutritional requirements before doing it. If you become very tired, you may be anemic, and you should watch for this, especially if you’ve never done a vegetarian/vegan diet before.
What is the best/easiest way to have raw food for lunch at work?
Obviously I can eat fruit but the problem with bringing soups frozen from home is that I would have to heat them in the microwave and that’s no good of course. I could bring some dips and raw veges but that wouldn’t be much of a lunch. I’m very new to raw food/cooking and wondering how I can incorporate it more into my life.
I take a train to work so can only carry things in a backpack.

storms tabouleh – sounds like boring rabbit food but is actually delicious Storm’s Raw Tabouli! (Our special staple "green stuff" recipe):
* one bunch cilantro
* one bunch parsley
* one bunch green onions
* two tomatoes
* one avocado
* half a cup of raw almonds
* cold-pressed olive oil
* unrefined sea salt
* raw honey
* half a lemon
Chop up cilantro, parsley, green onions, avocados and tomatoes in a bowl. Blend almonds to a fine flour in blender and add to bowl. Add the juice of half a lemon, a tablespoon of olive oil, a tablespoon of honey, and a teaspoon of salt. Change it up each time by adding a different vegetable/herb like corn, broccoli, or fresh basil, or a different spice like Italian or Mexican seasonings. Serves 3.
I use basil instead of cilantro because I hate cilantro.
Raw Deviled Egg-less "Egg" Spread
By Heidi and Justin of Raw Food, Right Now!
Serves 4-6
½ cup pure water (I prefer to start with less and add more water if needed)
Juice from one small lemon
1 clove garlic, peeled
1 ½ teaspoons sea salt (or to taste!!!)
1 ½ cups raw cashews
½ teaspoon dry mustard
1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Turmeric, as needed for color (approx. ½ teaspoon)
1. Place the water, lemon juice, garlic, sea salt and cashews in the high speed blender, and blend until very smooth.
2. With a spatula, take the mixture from the blender and place in a medium sized mixing bowl.
3. Slowly stir in the mustard, white vinegar, and turmeric until it reaches the color and flavor you desire.
4. Serve on top of flax seed crackers, celery sticks, or add a bit of water to make a creamy salad dressing.
I like this mixed with chopped mushrooms, celery and avocado to make a salad sort of thing.
waldorf salad – find a raw mayo recipe, mix with chopped apple, grapes, celery and walnuts
raw cakes can last out of the fridge until lunch time. carry a portion in a sandwich box. try this – grind up walnuts and dates in a food processor. make a layer of that on a plate. then a layer of chopped strawberry, papaya and banana, a layer of the crumbs, layer of fruit, layer of crumbs, then make a cream topping by blending pine nuts with a date, water and lemon juice. pour it over. you can decorate with fruit, nuts or flowers. cut a portion to take to work with you.

How much veggies should I give my dog with his raw food?
I feed my dog raw food, and the one he is eating right now doesn’t have the veggies mixed into it like some brands, like urban carnivore. I want to give him fresh veggies with his meal but not sure much to give him. Hes a 17lb French Bulldog X Boston Terrier and he is 11 months old.He eats a half pound patty a day.
Yes they do need Veggies!
No they don’t!!
While a dog may enjoy the odd carrot or piece or fruit, they have no nutritional need for them. They have no molars for grinding, amylase in their saliva or fermentation bacteria in their intestines – all proof that dogs do not need vegetables or have the ability to properly digest them.
Can i feed raw food with dog food to my pup?
I’m thinking of purchasing a high quality dog food such as canidae or innova but adding maybe a raw chicken leg. I’m not planning to mix them together, but maybe throw a chicken leg for breakfest then the other 2 meals would be the dog food. Is this acceptable and since it’s raw i’m thinking the pup will get some benefits.
Raw diets are very beneficial for dogs, my dogs used to be on complete raw diets, but with expenses and availability had to cut back to half raw half kibble (raw morning, kibble night). I’m glad you already plan to not mix them (was my first thought when i read this question), as the two substances digest at different rates and can increase their chance of getting worms and salmonella.
Though I am reluctant to feed them alot of kibble (due to the very poor ingrediants used in most), there are some high quality foods out there. Canidae was one for a while, though i’m not sure about its current rating. Taste of the Wild, Premium Edge, Fromms, Evo: red meat, Evangers, some of these foods are good for dogs and are either low in grains or grain free.
However, raw diets are not something to just jump into, so be sure to do your research on the subject before you begin. Dogs of different sizes/weights have different ratios of RMBs (raw meaty bones), organ meats, and muscle meats measured out by the ounce. For example, giving a small dog a whole chicken leg would be giving far too much calcium, etc than it’s body needs, the same as giving a large dog only a raw chicken leg will be giving it too less. Chicken necks are a better protein source as they are said to have a good balance between bone and meat on them (you can buy them from your local butcher).
Again, please do the research before you start and raw is a very healthy diet for your dog
How many times per day should I feed my 11wk old/2yr old poms on the raw food diet?
Should I feed the at separate times also? My little one likes to hog the bowl. Does it take the same amount of time to work it’s way through the body as regular dry kibble since raw food is supposed to be absorbed more into he dogs body?
Raw fed dogs can eat between 1 and 2 times a day. However, with puppies and small dogs, more frequent meals are better, as they are more susceptible to hypoglycemia.
Separate feeding is always best.
