I am all for animal rights but I cant take PETA seriously, do you?

I am a vegetarian and all for animal rights but I think peta has too many middle aged women who are bored with their lives and go around yelling through megaphones. I would much rather watch or hear something informative that is not being forced down my throat.

The food chain was something that was created by people like the thought of the world being flat which we now know was not right.
Living in Texas, I have found that it is more accepted to say that one is ‘vegetarian’ vs. ‘vegan’ for the simple reason of the approach that PETA has taken – and the effect hasn’t been a positive one.
Tossing paint on people – nude photos of what some see as ‘famous people’ naked with comments that are more confrontational vs. educational doesn’t attract others to possibly considering a different view than they already have – it repels.
As a woman – I find the nude photo approach to be offensive to women in general – turning them into nothing more than a ‘piece of meat’ which is exactly what they are suppose to be coming against – an oxymoron to be sure.
They don’t reach out on a local level and have little if any constant positive effect on a local level.
The out and out kill shelters that they run – totally against what many have posted links to on this very site asking people to go to a particular site to sign and get them to stop doing such – while PETA continues on.
Just too much contradiction for me with the group.
PETA takes things too far, they want people to have no pets in some cases. They don’t fully understand what they are talking about in some cases.

No. They are an extremist organization. And animals cannot have rights. It is a legal attribute ascribed to humans. It is nonsensical to say "animal rights". They can have them no more than they can "murder".
And, incidentally, anyone who thumbs me down is ignorant of the law and common sense. It saddens me they can vote.

Piscespe..– please point to the place in the Constitution where I can find "animal rights". Having a law ascribed to a thing does NOT give it "rights". otherwise most national monuments in D.C, have rights. Understand the law before excreting diarrhea of the mouth.

Hollywood– what does the law have to do with it? When you use a legal term, that’s what I address. If you are inciting a higher authority, my religion doesn’t ascribe "rights" to animals.

I agree, they are totally insane extremists (Nazi, much?) and take things way too far. I haven’t even seen them do anything good for animals…they just spend all their time attacking people who "abuse" them. But they go crazy over silly things that shouldn’t matter. They are also extremely hypocritical. For example, when celebrites wear fur coats, they splashed red paint on them. Well now that animal was killed for absolutely no reason at all, because it was already dead and now can’t even be worn as a coat. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a vegetarian who absoulutely adores animals, but I don’t see anything good about PETA besides something to laugh about.

Expressing views is fine, but coming at people in an agressive and confrontational way, as PETA does, is sadly not going to improve the situation for many animals, as the public does not like this approach.
Better PETA learnt how to improve its commmunication and persuasive tactics to where it treats all with respect and compassion. That’s the vegan way.

PSF11: Animals do have rights. That is why it a crime to abuse an animal. You can’t neglect a dog anymore. They can put you in jail. An animal in captivity has a right to food, water, proper shelter, veterinary care, and not to be beaten or physically abused. So you are WRONG! HA!
As for PETA. I think they do a lot of good. Their boycotts have changed things. They let me know whenever something is going on like if a certain company is using dog fur on their coats.
I wouldn’t follow everything they say though because I heard they said a person can’t even have a seeing eye dog if they are blind.

Anyway, to answer your question, I don’t oppose PETA, but I don’t support them either. I do think there are better ways to promote the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle though. Force & extremism is not the way to promote vegetarianism.

PETA on one hand is too extreme telling owners they are abusive for having outside pets, and hypocritical on the other hand by killing the vast majority of pets the take in their shelters, over 17,000 to date.

A much better and down to earth organization is Physicians committee for Responsible medicine.

They have already gotten 144 universities to stop animal testing and are down to 8 left. They are also strong advocates and educators about living a vegetarian lifestyle.

Different methods reach different people.
This, you must understand.
That is why there are things such as books, for people such as yourself. Then there are things such as PETA for those people who have never stepped foot in or near a library since elementary school — these are the people who never do out of their way to find answers for themselves, but wait for people to tell them what to do and what the answers are. These, unfortunately, are the majority. The sheep. The people who listen to politicians. The people who watch the nightly NEWS and believe this represents the whole world’s most important events etc. People who not only cannot think outside of the box, but live in a box, that is within other boxes, and are quite comfortable with this. They are the ‘ignorance is bliss’ crowd.
So, you should take PETA seriously, because they are a lot smarter than they may appear. They are catering their message for the dumb masses. The close-minded. The stubborn. The ones that do not listen unless someone is naked in a cage dressed like an animal with a megaphone throwing pamphlets… even then they only give a cursory glance in their direction, but at least they glanced — that’s the first step in the whole propaganda game.
I hope you found this informative. Just remember, this is exactly how GreenPeace got started — a handful of educated passionate people who listened during Psychology 101 in grade 11.

While I think some of their campaigns get results, I strenuously dislike the sexism in their campaigns. There are organizations far more worthy of my money that supports animal rights but doesn’t engage in the idiotic tactics PETA does.

Most people know PETA for its flashy naked protests and work with celebrities, but there is so much good work the organization does behind the scenes. It operates a mobile, low-cost spay/neuter clinic and delivers free dog houses to low-income areas. PETA puts a lot of pressure on companies to change and adopt more animal-friendly practices. The organization was recently named the most active group in shareholder activism for the fourth year in a row.

I agree 100%. It gets annoying having to watch those stupid videos about animals cruelty and why people shouldn’t eat meat. I think they should take a different approach into converting others into vegetarians/vegans. Prefereably one that doesn’t make me want to puke!

There are very few animal right organisations that get the publicity that PETA get. In my opinion they do some some fantastic work and the media are more than happy to give them publicity.
No organisation is perfect, and that includes PETA, but the majority of their campaigns are very successful and they bring to light animal abuse, and at least they get off their backsides and do something about it!

PSF11- in response to your answer- Animals have the right to live a cruelty free life, without suffering, there are laws that are in place for this, it is not just for domestic pets! It must be one of the most broken laws!
