In a DN exclusive interview, Amy Goodwin speaks with Andrew Stepanian, an animal rights activist who was jailed at a secretive prison known as a Communication Management Unit, or CMU. Stepanian is believed to be the first prisoner released from a CMU and talks about his experience there for the first time. He was sentenced to three years along with six other activists for violating a controversial law known as the Animal Enterprise Protection Act. The ACLU has filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of CMU’s.

Well I think a lot of people have been made apathetic by a system which is setup to drain people, not enrich them. A system which passes on the illusion that society is so big that no individual can ever make an effective change. I think people need to get past that illusion and realize the power they have in being able to freely speak their minds.
